Children, especially, will relate to Anne's humane and forthright views on everything including sex. This should be required viewing for everyone. The other actors were equally superb with none of them striking a false note. A real talent for the future without doubt. Ellie Kendrick was absolutely marvellous in the role of Anne. Her prodigious talent was in no doubt and the fact that she was otherwise normal actually made her seem that little bit more special. Anne was an irritating character at times with typical teenage behaviour. The final episode was as nerve shredding as any thriller and totally heartbreaking. Its real strength was the lack of sensationalism and romanticisation. Shes thrilled with the present, and begins writing in it straight away, addressing many of her entries to an imaginary friend named Kitty. It kept my whole family absolutely gripped from Monday to Friday making us laugh, cry and think as we watched Anne's story unfold. During the night, when the building was empty, they could also listen to the radio in the office. They had non-Jewish helpers who brought supplies and information on a regular basis. Though they were unable to move about freely, they were not entirely cut off from the outside world. Since the building was in use during the daytime hours, the hiders had to be very still and quiet so that they would not be discovered. These rooms were in the same building as Otto Frank’s business, which continued to operate in his absence. Developing as a writer Some texts in The Secret Annex differ from the original diary texts for reasons unknown to us. In those diary letters she had written about her conversations with Peter, about sexuality, and what they had shared about the subject. ![]() During this time, her family was sequestered in a secret annex made up of a few small attic rooms located at 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.
